Katy PerryWell, as if it wasn’t already established enough, Katy Perry is absolutely, 100 percent cooler than you.

Unless, that is, you’ve had the president of the United States call you one of his “favorite people.”

That’s what happened on Thursday night (July 31), when the “Dark Horse” singer did as one does on a Thursday night and performed at the White House. She took time off of her busyPrismatic Tour schedule appear at a dinner celebrating 46th anniversary of the Special Olympics.

“We have just one of my favorite people performing tonight — Katy Perry,” Obama told the crowd. “I love Katy Perry. We are so grateful to her.”

He added that — despite the fact that she’s pretty conservative — he also adores her mother. After meeting Mrs. Perry, he said, “now i know why [Katy’s] such a wonderful person.”

OK, Barack. We get it. Now it’s just getting annoying.

This isn’t the first time Katy’s performed for Obama. Back in 2012, she dressed up to a Las Vegas rally as a human ballot to support his re-election campaign.

Sterling silver tanzanite ring

0

Diamonds are famous for being a ladies best friend, but the elegant sparkling cobalt of a tanzanite makes no less of a statement. This stone which is a thousand times scarcer than diamonds and the birthstone of December looks gorgeous on rings, especially set as a large carat solo rock or one surrounded by diamonds.
Sterling silver Tanzanite Ring
Blue tanzanite rings of all types exist – single solitaires, multi-stone rings like diamond tanzanite rings, halos, paved eternity bands etc. Then there is the classification according to the metal it is set in – platinum, gold, sterling silver tanzanite rings being some of them.

While all metals are used for ring settings, each with its own pros and cons, sterling silver tanzanite rings have gained popularity. The reasonably priced substitute for platinum, palladium or white gold, sterling silver is an alloy of silver which is stable and hardy.

Compositionally sterling silver is a blend of 92.4% silver (other varieties do exist) with either copper or germanium. The less the silver in the alloy, the higher the metals malleability is. If you are buying sterling silver rings in the United States then it shouldn’t be too much of an issue as original good quality sterling silver will bear the mark ‘sterling’ or ‘925’. The latter indicates that the metal has 92.5% silver, an ideal amount for jewelry making.

Argentium sterling silver is the best quality – an alloy of silver, germanium and copper to make a tarnish resistant white metal. This resultant metal is both economical as well as sturdy and having a large percentage of silver makes it reasonably malleable. This malleability helps in setting in metals and shaping it in interesting and contemporary ring designs.
Sterling silver Tanzanite Ring
The first metal ever to be used by humans, a sterling silver tanzanite ring fundamentally has all the appeal of a platinum on at less than half the price in terms of metal. Not to mention unlike platinum’s matt finish surface, sterling silver can be polished to a smooth shine.

The tarnishing is a small price to pay for such an item, and can be cared for easily by using silver polish cream and cloth to buff the metal surface. You must care for it gently though, like any silver alloy it scratches. If the metal surface doesn’t seem to be taking the polishing well then you could also dip the ring in tarnish removal solutions which work just as well. Though sterling silver isn’t recommended for daily use rings, if taken care of they work just as well as the others.

The downside is that it is hard on sensitive skin types, so be cautious before you buy them and check for allergic reactions beforehand.

The second issue is a matter of genuineness. As the metal is an alloy, you must buy it from trusted jewelers and assure that the ring band has a hallmark of quality. Even a slight up or down in the percentage of each metal could severely reduce the metals resistance to tarnish orit’s strength and if you set a precious gem in it then it may not hold too well.

Ultimately sterling silver tanzanite rings are a great substitute to platinum, plus unlike platinum it is economical and the silvers malleability allows for easy resizing.

Cindy Chao and Sarah Jessica Parker collaborate on Ballerina Butterfly brooch to be sold by Sothebys Hong Kong

She may be best known for the Manolos worn by her alter ego Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, but hot on the heels of her eponymous shoe line, Sarah Jessica Parker proves she is a dab hand at jewellery design too.

The New York-based actress has collaborated with fine jewellery artist Cindy Chao to create a one-of-a-kind Black Label Masterpiece Ballerina Butterfly brooch, which will be auctioned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Sale this October, with net proceeds benefitting the New York City Ballet.

Parker and Chao first met at the Masterpiece Exhibition in Beijing three years ago and decided to work together in 2012 when the actress was a guest of honour at the opening of Chao’s boutique in the same city.

The brooch is the result of two years of hard work, during which the pair met several times to discuss sketches, wax models and gemstones. As with all her Black Label Masterpiece creations, Chao started the creative process by constructing a wax model of the brooch. The finished piece is the perfect amalgamation of Chao’s craftsmanship and Parker’s astute eye for style and design.

With a gold and titanium body, the 2014 Black Label Masterpiece Ballerina Butterfly brooch was inspired by the graceful beauty and elegance of ballet, a discipline close to Sarah Jessica Parker’s heart, who attended the School of American Ballet in New York. The brooch features a cushion-cut fancy brown diamond weighing 26.27 carats as well as three rough brown diamond slices totalling 47.71 carats and three rare conch pearls. These are surrounded by 98.09 carats of diamonds and fancy coloured diamonds.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Cindy Chao brand, which is renowned for its unique, sculptural jewellery. The Black Label Masterpiece Butterfly was first introduced in 2008 and, since then, Chao has designed a different one every year to symbolise her metamorphosis as an artist.

Chao says: “Sarah Jessica and I are two very different creative minds sharing the same artistic vision and passion. She truly appreciates the essence and soul of my creations, and I admire her innovative yet classic view on fashion and style. My annual Butterflies carry special meaning for me. Collaborating with Sarah Jessica for a cause we both deeply care for and believe in makes this Ballerina Butterfly all the more special in my heart.”

Parker readily returns the compliment: “I have had the great pleasure of knowing Cindy and her work for several years, and it has been an incredibly special experience to collaborate with her. Cindy’s jewellery designs are true works of art; they capture the eye and imagination in a memorable way. I am so pleased to partner with her on this project, which benefits the wonderful work of the New York City Ballet, an organisation that is close to my heart.”

The Ballerina Butterfly brooch is being shown this week in Paris as part of Haute Couture week in the capital before touring throughout Asia and then on to New York, where Chao and Parker will co-chair the New York City Ballet’s Fall Gala in September. It will return to Hong Kong in time for the Sotheby’s auction in October, where it is estimated to sell for between $750,000 and $950,000.

Points to know about cheap Tanzanite Rings

Tanzanite Rings

Tanzanite Wedding Ring

Buying a cheap Tanzanite Ring is a task as it is, so if you’re working on this purchase in a limited budget then you have a lot more factors to look into. Along with the grade, rarity and size of a tanzanite ring which effect its price, metal and setting also play their part.

Here are a few points that have an impact on price of tanzanites and things you must know when you buy cheap tanzanite rings.

Tanzanite Gold Ring

1. Stone Grade. The first step towards buying a cheap tanzanite ring is cutting costs on the tanzanite itself. This means you steer clear away from high grade stones – AAA or gems with perfect color, clarity and cut. Being a stone of such brilliant color, imperfections are easily hidden if the stone is set in a bezel or halo setting, or paved into a tinted metal.A tanzanite gold ring already exhibits such a strong contrast and sparkle thanks to the yellow gold that the minor inclusions in the tanzanite like feathers and needles aren’t seen by the naked eye. Scout the market for stones with such inclusions; even a minor crack or crystal impurity drops the price of the tanzanite drastically.

2. Carat. Buying a stone of low grade doesn’t necessarily mean you choose a tanzanite that loses its properties all together, so you cannot go lower than a certain level if you want that intense and saturated blue. The next best way is to cut down the carat weight of the gem. For example an antique tanzanite ring often gives equal weightage to the quality of the metal and the stone, drawing attention to both. In this case the blue complements the metal, however small the actual stone may be.

3. Cut. Two kinds of cut tanzanites exist, calibrated and single stones. If you plan to cut costs by custom making your ring, be sure to pick a calibrated stone as there are precut to standard sizes and are much cheaper.

4. The Metal. In terms of the metal you set the tanzanite, in order to buy a cheap tanzanite ring you have to steer clear away from platinum and palladium. Even yellow and rose gold are relatively high priced, so you can look at sterling silver and white gold. Yes, they have their disadvantages as they tarnish easy and are rough on sensitive skin, but if the ring isn’t for daily use then in appearance no one will be able to tell the difference!

5. Lastly keep in mind throughout the process that you mustn’t sacrifice too much. A tanzanites beauty lies in its color, so pick a stone with a good saturation. Don’t go for synthetic tanzanites or gems that are cobalt coated. Heat treated tanzanites are a reasonable option – most tanzanites in the market are treated as a natural blue tanzanite is extremely rare. This doesn’t affect the quality or strength of the stone but purely enhances color.

Don’t get fooled in the process of cost cutting, and make sure you know what you’re getting in return for the money you pay. Synthetic tanzanites have flooded the market so you shopping online for deals that seem vague is not worth risking. Stick to buying a cheap ring by reducing expenditure in every step instead of losing one aspect all together.

Lights, camera, action!

Gwyneth Paltrow turned to Hollywood heavyweights for inspiration as the face of Max Factor’s Modern Icon campaign. The 41-year-old actress, who was tapped as the famed makeup house’s creative inspiration in 2012, channeled Audrey Hepburn, Madonna, Farrah Fawcett, and Brigitte Bardot in a set of new advertisements.

It’s no surprise that Gwynnie paid homage to each of the ladies, since they are all credited with influencing style and makeup in their respective generations.

Paltrow kicked things off in the early 1960s with a shot inspired by Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s character Holly Golightly. It was a classic recreation of the beloved look and featured Gwyneth in black dress, strings of pearls, and her hair in a sleek French twist. Her makeup resembled Hepburn’s signature winged eyeliner from the flick. Color us impressed.

Paltrow’s journey through Hollywood’s golden era continued as she attempted to revive the sexiness of French actress and classic pinup Brigitte Bardot. Unfortunately, being a sexpot isn’t exactly synonymous with Gwyn’s Goop-y reputation and the recreation seems off, despite her nailing Bardot’s look with bangs, tussled tresses, and heavy eye makeup. Her seductive but demure pose lacks the va va voom of Bardot.

For the 1970s, the Oscar-winning actress used Farrah Fawcett as her muse. She amped up the glam with a plunging gold sequin dress and blown out, feathered waves, similar to the Charlie’s Angels star’s signature ‘do. While we don’t really see the Farrah inspiration in this particular shot, Paltrow looks stunning.

Gwyneth Patrow Madonna

Paltrow capped off her campaign by paying homage to her former BFF Madonna. She revealed her best “Material Girl” look with a black mesh top, gobs of gaudy jewelry, teased locks, bright pink eye shadow, and fuchsia lipstick. While Madge and Paltrow famously parted ways after a falling out in 2009, we have to admit, her recreation of the 1980s icon’s style is solid.

Recreating iconic images is nothing new, but Paltrow seemed to have fun with the advertisements and it is nice to see a different side of her, even if they weren’t all believable. Which look is your favorite?
